In the Hoop (ITH) Projects

!: In the Hoop (ITH) Projects

In-the-hoop projects are very similar in many ways to appliqué embroidery designs done in the hoop. Both have a placement stitching line, to tack down line, followed by detailing and a normally satin stitch outline. Depending upon the design, there may be only one set of placement and tack down lines or there may be a few sets of them-but they are similar. From my experience working in a store, I seen many people avoid appliqué and/or in-the-hoop projects simply because they think they might be too difficult for them. So let's demystify some of those steps.

First, tutorials are included with in-the-hoop projects giving you step-by-step instructions by most if not all digitizers. If you take it one step at a time you would be surprised how simple and fun they can be.The added benefit of an in-the-hoop project is that once it's out of the hoop, generally it is all done. It is a quick way to get a feeling of accomplishment pulling a finished project out of the hoop--great for those of you who do not have a lot of time to sew.

In-the-hoop start off projects with a "placement" stitch. It really does not matter what color of thread you use for the stitch placement. The placement stitch won't show in the completed project because it will be covered by other stitches. It is just a stitch to give you a visual of where to place the material (the instructions will tell you what type of material to place down, i.e., fabric, batting, etc.). The machine will automatically stop allowing you time to put your material down just like it stops for any othercolor change. That is why the digitizer made this placement line a different color-so the machine will know when to stop.

After placing the material over the placement line, the second step is normally to "tack down stitch. The tack down stitch will hold down that material in place so it does not shift. After the tack down is complete, you will want to take the hoop out of the machine but not the material out of the hoop and trim very closely to the stitching. (Again, the color of the thread does not matter as the color change is there so that the machine would know when to stop so you can trim.) Once you have trimmed the material, you will place the hoop back into the machine to complete the design. More often than not, you will be given instructions at some point to wind a bobbinwith matching thread for the top as well as bobbin for a satin stitch which can be seen on both sides.

Depending upon the in-the-hoop project, I like to use to wash away stabilizer. When the machine embroidery design is complete I can either throw it in the wash or use a stencil cutter to melt away the stabilizer giving the satin stitch edge to clean and tidy finish. Tear away stabilizers have a tendency to leave little pokies bits sticking out of stabilizer from the satin stitching when pulled away. (Tip: If this has happened to you, use a "cover up" pen matching the color you used on the satin stitching and color the pokies.)

I would included a free sample Luggage Spotter project for you to try your hand at an in-the-hoop project. It only takes 2, 6 "pieces of fabric, 1, 6"piece of batting, embroidery thread, and an elastic head .25 "wide band (or shoe string) to complete the project. Complete step-by-step instructions with photos are included. Should you have any questions along the way, just write me and I will try to get you past the hump.

Every in-the-hoop project will have some similarities. Some will be more involved than others but they will all have to tack down line placement, stitches, and then your final embroidery detailing.

Make Your Craft Show Display Stand Out From The Crowd

!: Make Your Craft Show Display Stand Out From The Crowd

If you have decided to try your hand at setting up at craft shows, festivals, or flea markets, then you'll need to have the right craft show display to make your wares stand apart from the rest. This is especially important if you are selling something like jewelry or any other staple craft show item. Having a great craft show display can make a big difference between having someone walk right by you or stop for a look and hopefully a sale. Here are some great ways to create an eye-catching craft show display.

Craft Show Display Basics

When you first get started you will have to purchase the right equipment and this can be a bit of an investment, but if you think you will continue doing shows then you'll need the following:

o Canopy or tent - The proper canopy or tent will protect your goods from rain and sun. Delicate crafts made from fabric, paper or handmade clothing can become damaged from just a few hours of direct sunlight.

o Tables - Most craft show displays require at least table or two for their set up. Buy the lightest, easiest thing to carry around. You can find many aluminum models that fold up with ease and can be tucked away in almost any vehicle. Don't forget a small chair for yourself.

o Weights - Make sure you carry weights, large water bottles that can be filled, or small sand bags. You will need to tether these to your tables or tent with bungee cords in case of a windy day.

o Display cases - No matter what you are selling you can find the right craft show display case for your items. Look at retails suppliers or ask other vendors. A thrift store can give you some great items on the cheap.

o Quality fabric - Cover your tables in bright fabric. Take your time to come up with a great color scheme for your craft show display. Work your tent color, table covers, and products into a harmonious craft show display.

Beyond The Basics

Once you have the basic equipment that you'll need for your craft show display then you'll need a few creative ideas to get people into your booth.

o The set up - Make sure that your tables are positioned in a way that is easy for customers to see. Keep your tables near the front of the tent so people can walk by casually. Don't expect people to walk to the back of your booth, it may seem obvious, but people want to keep going unless something really interests them.

o Height - Try hanging things from the tent to catch people's eye from afar. This can work for a lot of items. If you can't do that, make sure you vary the height on your tables. Use small shelves, boxes, or other display items to give the tables a richer feel.

o Mirrors - Always bring a mirror for people to look at things they may want to try on.

o Signage - Have a banner or business cards on display is a great idea. Even if someone doesn't want something today, they can come back and find you or email you.

o Pricing - For many people seeing clear price tags on items is very helpful. Lots of shoppers don't feel comfortable engaging in chitchat over every item in the booth. If you are getting really busy, this will save you lots of time from answering questions.

Hints To Keep You Ahead

If you are a newcomer to the festival scene then you may not yet realize what an ally other vendors can be for you. Although they may seem like the competition and in some cases they are, they can also help give you invaluable advice. Remember to always respect your boundaries with your craft show display. Most arguments between vendors center around just an inch or two! When space is at a premium people can become very territorial, just remember to take care with your craft show display and stay on your neighbor's good side. He'll be the guy you entrust with your craft show display when it's time for a bathroom break. Follow these tips to have a great craft show display no matter whether you're a newbie or a festival regular!

Perfect Embroidery Placement on Your Garment

!: Perfect Embroidery Placement on Your Garment

Have you ever hooped a shirt more than once? Have you ever spent a lot of time and money on a special project just to have it look a little off when you take it out of your hoop? These will always be issues if you are not using a consistent method to your hooping techniques. This issue really hit home for me when I pulled out one of my early embroidery projects and noticed that it was practically on the shoulder! It also made me wonder how many shirts I had done in my earlier years in the industry that we this far off. I must say in my own defense back then that there weren't the tools and resources available to me that there is today. Thank god for the internet, right?

Ultimately the placement of your embroidery is very important as such is the alignment. I don't think there is an embroiderer out there that didn't pull something out of the hoop and realized that it looked like it was running up hill or down. The best piece of advise that I got to help with this came from my husband who is into wood working. He said to me: "Honey you need to measure twice and cut once". Of course this is a golden rule for wood working and I believe we should all apply to every embroidery project that we tackle because after all you really just want to embroider the garment or project once and I have yet to meet an embroiderer that enjoys removing stitching!

So as promised here are some common garments and the placement measurements for each. Please keep in mind that each shirt manufacturer is different and that these can vary.

Polo Shirt, T-Shirts, Sweatshirts with a small Design
7.5 to 9 inches down from where the collar and the shoulder seam come together.

T-Shirts & Sweatshirts with Full Front Design
The top of the design should be 3-3.5 inches down from the bottom of the neck. In order to figure this accurately you will need to know the distance from the center point of the design to the top.

Over Pocket
Center on the pocket not the shoulder seem as previously mentioned. You also may need to adjust the machine form the center point of the center depending on your hoop.

Jackets
6-8 inches down and 3.5-4 inches from the center

It is important to understand that these are based off the top of your design. Each design that you sew will have a different height and therefore will need to account to that by taking these numbers then adding to them half your design height in order to find the center of the design. So for example if your design is 10 inches tall your center point for your design would be approximately 8 inches from the bottom of the neck for full font embroidery.

Sewing and Embroidery Machine - An Ideal Starter For a Home Business

!: Sewing and Embroidery Machine - An Ideal Starter For a Home Business

If you want to set up a home boutique, all you need to get started is a sewing machine. Now there are a number of computerized sewing and embroidery machines available on the market that would suit every need and every budget. However, there are some basic things you need to know before you go and buy one.

What are Sewing and Embroidery Machines: As the name makes it clear, are machines with combined functions. They are more convenient than separate machines. With their function of computerized sewing using a vast range of designs which you can edit for yourself, they allow you to add beauty and charm of themed detail to your sewn dresses.

How Much a Sewing and Embroidery Machine Costs: The cost of these machines varies greatly and can be anything between 0 and 00. The cost of your machine would depend on its features, the size and the design software you purchase to work with. For a home boutique, however, the lower ranges would be good enough.

Types of Sewing and Embroidery Machines: Some are a misnomer as they do not do the work of a regular sewing machine. They are solely devoted to embroidering. If you already have a sewing machine, you can buy this type of sewing machine.

Other machines, which are more costly, combine the functions of both. Usually these have a removable unit which is taken out while doing sewing. If you are setting up a new unit and don't have a sewing machine, you can go for this type of machine.

It is advisable to visit your local dealer for more information about the types of machines and do your research before you go for purchase.

Before you operate one, you also need to know about some technical terms and processes.

Hooping: Sewing and embroidery machines have a hoop that fits into the embroidery arm of the machine. Placing the fabric on the hoop and fitting it into the arm is called hooping. While placing the fabric on the hoop, care has to be taken that the cloth is taut and does not move during embroidery or the design will not be stitched out correctly.

Stabilization: Stabilization is the process of placing a stabilizer under or within or over the fabric before you begin. Stabilizer is an additional piece of material that stiffens and supports the fabric for proper usage. There are different types of stabilizers that can be cut or torn or dissolved after you have finished.

Digitizing: Digitizing is the process of turning an image into a language understandable by the sewing and embroidery machine. It turns the image into a design that the machine can embroider. However, you must have the knowledge of computer graphics to do it; if you don't have you can purchase prepared designs.

Computerized sewing and embroidery machines are very easy to operate and allow you to show the full range of your creativity for your home boutique.

Embroidery Sewing Machines - Making Embroidery Easier

!: Embroidery Sewing Machines - Making Embroidery Easier

If you feel like there are too many options and gadgets available on Embroidery Sewing Machines you are not alone. Many people would like to get advice on which machines have what they need but do not have added features that they do not need. With each additional feature you spend additional dollars so only get the machine that has the features you need.

Who or where can you turn for advice and help in deciding on a machine to purchase? There are any numbers of sources one can turn to but I recommend looking online or speak with a professional in the tapestry field for advice on which model you need. Since practicality is priority in a hectic and expensive world nowadays, settle for what your budget can afford. Do not go beyond your means because you may not be able to hurdle the huge expense. Remember, Embroidery Sewing Machines can cost between hundreds and thousands of dollars based on what features they include.

Did you know that there are embroidery sewing machines that are much more expensive than major home appliances? When you encounter such a case, be very careful in making your decision because you might later regret your choice. In some cases, spending too much on a particular type of sewing machine might not prove a good investment if in few years you will find needing another replacement.

Choosing the correct embroidery sewing machines that has the proper features you need and nothing extra is only one thing to consider when dealing with embroider machine. You must also remember that if you want the Embroidery Sewing Machines you purchase to remain in good condition and function properly, another thing to consider in which model to purchase would be the parts.

How are the parts cleaned? Are they removable for easy cleaning? What do you use to clean them? How much do the parts cost to replace or repair is the other factor that one needs to consider prior to purchasing new Embroidery Sewing Machines.

If you incorporate all these factors into your decision when purchasing new Embroidery Sewing Machines, you are surely going to end up with the best machine for your money.
